Art & Culture

The Plantage has a rich cultural tradition. As its many cultural attractions testify, from the Rembrandt House Museum to the Hermitage Amsterdam. In the seventeenth century the streets around the posh Sint Antoniesbreestraat became an artists’ quarter. Many painters lived and worked here, including Rembrandt van Rijn and Govert Flinck, as well as major patrons and art dealers such as Hendrick van Uylenburg.

Amsterdam had grandeur. It was one of the world’s leading cities. Here art itself was a form of wealth. Amsterdam’s burghers had their portraits painted by the great masters, they accumulated art and showed off their collections.
