Jewish Historical Museum
Why is Amsterdam also referred to as Mokum? Why might an Amsterdammer call his friend a ´gabber´ and wish him ´mazzel tov´? Because the local language in Amsterdam is full of Yiddish words. This is a sign of the major impact the Jewish population has had on the city in recent centuries. The Joods Historisch Museum (Jewish Historical Museum), located in a cluster of no less than four old synagogues, makes this history visible with large paintings, small drawings, antique objects, photographs, films and modern 3D presentations. A truly multi-media museum for all ages. In addition to the three permanent exhibitions, the Jewish History Museum also has a special children’s section and always has one or two temporary exhibitions. It is a museum you have to take your time to visit. The best thing to do is choose one of the three permanent exhibitions to study closely and zap through the rest or leave that for a subsequent visit.
