Of course there are gorillas and elephants, giraffes and lions, penguins, pythons and giant crocodiles, just like every other zoo. But Artis is so much more. Artis is also culture and history in a leafy park full of old monuments, romantic corners and inviting benches. Artis is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands. A unique spot, where the city bustle, animal noises and ever-present children’s voices melt together. From the South American pampas to the Butterfly Pavilion, from the Planetarium to the Aquarium.
Artis has the best terraces of Amsterdam. Where else can you have a cappuccino in the city centre while watching a penguin? Artis has no less than eight places where you can sit down and have a snack. Artis is paradise even in the rain. Turn left straight after the entrance and head into the Planetarium or the Geological Museum. At the end of the park you will find the Aquarium to the right and the Butterfly Pavilion to the left. Both are sheltered and exotic enough to make you forget the dreary weather.
