The Amsterdam Music Theatre

Amsterdam’s Music Theatre on the River Amstel is the home of De Nederlandse Opera and Het Nationale Ballet. The building is specially designed to accommodate opera, ballet and music performances. When it opened in 1986, the complex was dubbed the Stopera (stadhuis + opera), since it houses both the town hall and the opera.

The theatre seats 1,600. Yet its semicircular form ensures that the seats are nevertheless close to the stage. It retains a pleasant, intimate atmosphere. In addition to performances of opera, ballet and music, the Muziektheater is also a prodigious supplier of products. All the costumes, props and sets for Nederlandse Opera and Nationale Ballet productions are made in house. Every Saturday the Stopera offers a guided tour behind the scenes, including the costume studios and dressing rooms. A small presentation also offers an opportunity to admire the wigs and garments used in operas and ballets then and now.
